The play Dimboola was written by Jack Hibberd in the late 1960s. It is said to be Australia’s most performed play, with more Australians having seen Dimboola than any other musical, comedy or play. The play is the country celebration of the wedding of Morrie McAdam, a protestant, to Reen Delaney, a catholic. No holds are barred as the two families come together for the wedding which Jack Hibberd calls “the testing of strengths of the newly conjugated tribes”. The family members try to preserve social form and dignity in the face of impending disasters. And disasters there are a plenty! After the drink has flowed a little too freely, mayhem ensues when the families exchange insults and punches as they resolve to come to terms with the situation. Dimboola’s appeal stems from its unique presentation of including the audience as the wedding guests, sharing all the events and intimacies of Morrie and Reen’s Big Day. When guests arrive at a performance of Dimboola in Dimboola, they are in for some outrageous fun. Sixteen characters of all age groups make up the “bridal table from hell” and while one might not like to think that we are laughing at ourselves, we all know one or more of the characters portrayed or we have even been to a wedding just like Dimboola.

Biography
Fortunato Isgro was born 17 March 1983 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. From a young age he was introduced to traditional Italian and 50′s English music, where family sing-a-longs were a common place. His natural gift for music was soon realised at the age of eight, when he began teaching himself to play keyboard by ear.

From these humble beginnings Fortunato started playing and singing professionally in many clubs and pubs on the Gold Coast at the age of sixteen. After being in the industry for a few years, Fortunato decided to broaden his musical capabilities by learning and singing traditional Italian songs. His launch into the Italian scene was well received by the Italian community in Australia and resulted in him establishing regular gigs at many clubs, restaurants and wineries across the country.

Over time, Fortunato has built a strong rapport and fan-base within Australia and is renowned for his powerful voice, extensive repertoire of both English and Italian songs and his ability to entertain large groups of people. He regularly performs at a number of Italian clubs and festivals throughout Australia, including the Australian Italian Festival Ingham, Hervey Bay Cultural Festival, Stanthorpe Three Saints Festival and the Santa Eufemia Festival Adelaide to name a few.

He has performed with many great artists including Kamal, Mark Vincent, Tony Pantano and Tony Di Marti.

Fortunato is currently promoting the upcoming release of his latest album, ‘Journey’ to be launched in April 2011. The album will feature a mix of modern, original Italian and English songs that are sure to impress.

What is Bomboniere?

It is an Italian tradition whereby small gifts are given to the guests as a thank you for sharing in their wedding day. Bombonieres were traditionally five white sugar coated almonds placed in white tulle and tied with ribbon. The five almonds symbolize health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long life. The significance of the sugarcoated almond is the sweetness of the sugar and the bitterness of the almond, to symbolise the “bitter/sweet” nature of married life. Bombonieres can be given to each guest, or if something more elegant has been chosen then it can be given per family/couple.
